Mondi completes acquisition of Alberta pulp mill, commits to invest in mill modernization, sustainability enhancements, and facility expansion
Delivering job opportunities, economic advancement, and sustainability upgrades to the Hinton community and the Hinton Pulp Mill
Global packaging and paper manufacturing leader Mondi Group chose Canada for its next venture in sustainable production. Mondi has over 100 operations in more than 30 countries, and is recognized for their ardent commitment to sustainability – from their reusable, recyclable and compostable products, to their strategic supply chains and ESG-driven stakeholder networks.
Mondi set its sights on acquiring a pulp mill in the region of Hinton, which it completed in February of 2024. The acquisition of the mill and intended investment in a new kraft paper machine signals fully integrated operations for Mondi in the Americas, into its existing network of 10 paper bags plants in the region.
Mondi intends to invest in the mill to improve productivity and sustainability performance. This first project phase will see upgrades to the Hinton Pulp Mill, including enhanced power generation and energy efficiency. In a second phase, subject to pre-engineering, permitting and market development, Mondi intends to expand the facility with a new integrated kraft paper machine.
Mondi’s investment will bring tangible, impactful benefits to the region of Hinton. Existing jobs will be retained, and new employment opportunities will be created through the acquisition and upgrade efforts at the Hinton Pulp Mill. Mondi customers will benefit from the integrated and shortened kraft paper supply chain, reducing the carbon footprint of Mondi’s packaging products in the region.
